Push in the compression release on top of the saw. This will make pulling the rope much easier due to the compression being released from the engine. This will automatically push back out once the saw is started. Pull the choke lever to the full choke position. This will automatically set the chainsaw to the start position.

As things break in and presumably the compression increases a bit, I imagine I may want to be able to start using the release, but I'm afraid there still won't be enough compression, so here's the question: Do any of you know if Husqvarna (or aftermarket) makes a compression release that releases less compression, or alternatively, if there's a

Set the choke, hit the compression release and it will start on the first pull, if I am quick enough on hitting the choke it will stay running, if not hit the compression release again and a half hearted pull it is running. When warm, it will start without being set to high idle, just hit the compression release and give it a pull

In the future I would stick with Husqvarna, they are simply a better built saw. They have better anti vibration, better air filtration, lighter, more power per CCl, and better overall design. I have had several saws with compression release but have never used it.
Sometimes you have an easy repair on your lawn tractor. Most of the overhead valve engines have a compression release feature that allows for the starter to not have to work hard to crank the engine. It's a slight raising, or bump, on the lobe of the camshaft. What it does is open the valve a little early to allow excess compression to bleed off.
To check it remove the valve covers and turn the engine over by hand watching the valves to make sure the fully open and close. If the compression release is working you will see it bump either the intake or exhaust valve open just before top dead center compression stroke. If the valves don't fully open replace the camshaft.
How to Fix a Compression Release Problem in Your Briggs & Stratton Engine First, you need to access the valve cover. Now with the cover off, you can see the rockers, push rods, valve springs, and valve stems. Find the intake valve. You will need to turn the flywheel clockwise until you see this valve open (move downwards) and then close again.
